How to make a strobe video, and how to keep it safe to watch
No lyrics, no story, just a track and a screen that slams white on every kick. A strobe video is the fastest thing you can build in a browser, and the one format where the settings you pick actually matter to somebody watching.

Most people looking for a strobe video maker want one of two different things. Either the screen punches on the drums, so the flashing is the song made visible, or it pulses at a fixed rate no matter what the music does, which is the disorienting club look. Two separate clocks, two separate settings, so decide which one you are after first. Then there is the second half of the job, the one most tutorials skip.
Style one: flash on the beat
This is the default in the visualizer and it is the one that reads as music rather than as a broken screen. Load your track, then leave the text box empty. An empty text box means there is nothing to draw between flashes, so you get pure black slammed by pure light, which is exactly what a strobe clip is.
Under Flash Settings, set the trigger mode to beat detection and pick Strobe (color slam) as the flash effect. Random mix is fun for edits but it throws glitch slices, shakes and zoom punches into the pile, and a real strobe wants one gesture repeated. Two more dials finish it:
- Beat sensitivity starts at 1.35. Lower it and more of the track counts as a hit, so the screen flashes more often. Raise it and only the loudest moments punch through.
- Flash intensity and duration starts at 180 ms. Shorter feels like a camera flash, longer holds the frame bright and the video starts to read as blinking rather than strobing.
For the classic look, set the palette to Mono (white strobe only). Every other palette throws color at you, which is great for a genre edit and wrong for a stark black and white strobe. Style two: a steady flicker you set in Hz
The other kind of strobe video ignores the music completely and runs on a clock. There are two controls for it. The persistent flicker pair is the literal one: a speed slider from 2 Hz to 30 Hz and an opacity slider from 0 to 100. Speed sets how many times a second the frame alternates, opacity sets how hard. At 40 percent it sits over the picture like a pulse. At 100 it is a full blackout alternation, which is as harsh as this gets.
The second route is the fixed interval trigger mode, which fires the flash effect every so many milliseconds instead of on the drums. It runs from 80 ms up to 1500 ms and defaults to 250 ms. Worth doing the arithmetic there: 250 ms between flashes is four flashes every second. Hold that number, because it comes back in a minute.

The flash rate that actually matters
Here is the part that decides whether your strobe video is fine to post. Fast full-screen flashing can trigger a seizure in someone with photosensitive epilepsy. The Epilepsy Society puts photosensitivity at around 3 percent of people with epilepsy, and says lights flashing between 16 and 25 times a second are the most likely to trigger a seizure, with the broader sensitive range running from about 3 Hz to 30 Hz.
The accessibility rule is tighter and simpler. WCAG success criterion 2.3.1 says content should not contain anything that flashes more than three times in any one second period, unless the flash is below a defined luminance threshold or small enough on screen to not count. A "general flash" is a pair of opposing changes in relative luminance of 10 percent or more where the darker image sits below 0.80, so a black frame going white is very much a flash under that definition. There is also a size exception: flashing that occupies no more than about a quarter of the central 10 degrees of the viewer's vision falls under the threshold. That exception rarely helps a music video, because the whole point is that the entire frame flashes.
Translate that back to the sliders:
- The persistent flicker slider spans 2 Hz to 30 Hz. Only the bottom setting, 2 Hz, sits under the three-flashes-a-second line. The default 15 Hz is inside the sensitive band, and 16 Hz to 25 Hz is the worst part of it.
- Fixed interval at the default 250 ms is four flashes a second, which is over the line. Around 340 ms or slower gets you to three or fewer.
- Beat-triggered flashing follows the tempo, so a 174 BPM track flashing on every beat is just under three a second, while flashing on eighth notes at that tempo is nearly six.
- Dropping flicker opacity, using a dimmer palette or keeping some picture on screen between flashes all reduce the luminance swing, which is the other half of the threshold.
None of this means do not make the video. It means knowing which side of the line you are on.
Warn people, because the platform might not
TikTok is the one platform doing meaningful work here. It warns creators when they upload videos with effects that could trigger photosensitive epilepsy, and viewers who hit content flagged as risky get a prompt inviting them to skip all similar videos. That is a real safety net, and it is also the only one you can count on. Everywhere else, the warning is whatever you decide to put there.
So put one there. Two lines of text costs you nothing:
- A warning card on the first few seconds of the video itself, before the flashing starts, since autoplay means plenty of people never read a caption.
- A line in the description or caption saying the video contains flashing lights.
